James Coombs PhD Director and Company Secretary James Coombs is an internationally known consultant in biomass energy, organic waste management, biotechnology, agriculture and food. He has performed extensive work for governments, the European Commission, NGOs and private clients in these areas. He currently manages CPL's work for a number of European Projects including EPOBIO, BioMatNet and the Biofuels Technology Platform. He is also responsible for work for public sector bodies, as well as writing and editing CPL Press publications. Award 1996 - Gold Medal awarded by His Highness Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, The Amir of the State of Bahrain for contributions to the development of Biomass Energy History 2001 - CPL Scientific Publishing Services Ltd trading as CPL Press - Director and Company Secretary 1987 - 2001 CPL Scientific Group - Director 1982 - 1992 EC Expert. This included work for DG XII on biological conversion and as the nominated EC/UK expert for evaluation of research proposals for the following programmes: Biomass Energy, Fermentation Pilot Plants, JOULE, ECLAIR, Agricultural Development, AIR. He also provided services for DG VI (Agriculture) and DG XVII (Energy). 1981-1988 Private consultant in technology. Extensive work for the UK Government, the European Commission and private clients in food, (especially sugar, starch and palm oil) as well as agriculture, biotechnology, organic waste treatment, etc with an emphasis on renewable energy and non-food use of crops and residues. Overseas work included projects in tropical countries (ranging from China and the Philippines through Kenya and Cameroons to Brazil and Chile) as well as supervision of research projects in member states of the EC. A number of new companies were established as part of these projects. Director of a small company building anaerobic digesters (ADBAC Ltd) and partner in a University linked consultancy (Bio Services, linked to King's College, University of London). 1968-1981 Tate and Lyle plc Group Research and Development.
