The Manual of Biocontrol Agents

Edited by Leonard G Copping
BCPC  November 2004

Hardcover  752 pages  ISBN 1901396355      £115.00

This publication replaces the BioPesticide Manual. It remains similar in format, however the text has been completely revised and updated, with the addition of around 100 new entries, over half of which are macro-organisms - the sector that has shown the largest growth within biological control. Although different in style, this book is complementary to the BCPC Pesticide Manual and where appropriate cross references are provided.

As previously, it is a compendium covering the diverse range of naturally occurring products now commercially available for pest, weed and disease control. It now includes details of 373 biocontrol agents in over 1400 products of the following types:

  • Micro-organisms (baculoviruses, bacteriophages, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and nematodes)
  • Natural products (compounds from micro-organisms, algae, marine crustaceans and higher plants)
  • Macro-organisms (Insects and mites that are predators or parasitoids of insects, mites or weeds)
  • Semiochemicals (Behaviour modifying chemicals used in mating dusruption, lures or insect monitoring strategies)

For each product the following aspects are covered as appropriate, nomenclature, source, production, target pests, target crops, mode of action, biological activity, commercial aspects, application, compatibility, toxicity and environmental impact. In addition there are extensive sections covering CAS registry numbers and codes, current and superseded trade names, taxonomic species and genera, Latin/English and English/Latin glossary, directory of biocontrol companies.

It is an invaluable reference source for all concerned with biotechnology, natural product research, crop and environmental protection, conservation, integrated crop management, horticulture, food production, processing and marketing.
