This handbook is an edited vension of the final report of the European Commission and IEA Bioenergy sponsored
Pyrolysis Network that officially finished in 2004. It provides a companion volume the first and second handbooks *
published in 1999 and 2002 respectively and it is again intended that this will provide a useful guide both to newcomers
to the subject area as well as those already involved in research, development and implementation. A significant feature
of this third volume is the greater attention paid to wider issues concerning pyrolysis including environment, health and
safety, norms and standards and marketability.
*Note: volume 1 and volume 2 are
now available (May 2008) as reprints (original text in hardcover
format - print-on-demand)
The most comprehensive and up-to-date
publication on this subject is Science in Thermal and Chemical Biomass Conversion
The benefits from the PyNe Network have been in regularly bringing together the hard core of scientists and engineers
from Europe and North America who are involved in developing fast pyrolysis in order to share in information and help
develop the technology. This small group has, however, not been the only beneficiary as all the meetings have been open
to guests and visitors and some meetings have attracted up to 80 participants, all of whom have both contributed to or
benefited from the activities of the Network.
A key feature of this PyNe network has been the associated European Commission contracts on health and safety
(Chapters 4. 5 and 6), norms and standards (Chapter 2 and 3). market competitivity Chapter 10) and recommendations
for policy and strategy arising from an Expert meeting (Chapter 12). These are solid evidence of the co-operation within
the network and contributions to resolving technical and non-technical barriers.
