The NF-AIRID (Non-Food Agro-Industrial Research Information Dissemination) Network was established
with funding from the AIR programme of DG XII for two years 1995/6). The main objective was to bring the
results of research and demonstration activities funded by the European Commission (EC) to the attention of
potential users. As indicated in the project title, the focus was on the non-food use of both established and novel
agricultural crops as well as trees, wood and agricultural wastes. The emphasis was on activities funded under the
ECLAIR. AIR and FAIR programmes, with additional information provided from national sources and international
organisations. The scope covered activities from the farm gate to the final user in all areas, other than direct combustion
for heat. or other thermal conversion techniques (gasification. pyrolysis, catalysis. etc). In particular it dealt
with properties of raw materials and manufacturing systems related to liquid fuels, bulk chemicals, fertilisers,
biopolymers. Lubricants, coatings, detergents, fine chemicals, composites. fibre, fabrics, paper and card.
In addition the project aimed to assist the Commission in maintaining the technical and industrial content
of future programmes and help avoid duplication between national and EC funded activities, as well as helping
identify areas where research is needed, or unnecessary. The last objective was to help encourage the formation
of new partnerships between agriculture and industry, as well as between research groups in future projects supported
by the EC.
Information on funded projects and related matters was disseminated in the form of information sheets that
(at the end of the programme) were brought together in this volume.
