Daylight Design of Buildings - A Handbook for Architects and Engineers

Nick Baker and Koen Steemers, University of Cambridge
James and James  July 2001

Softcover  250 pp with colour illus throughout  ISBN 9781873936887      £75.00

To complement the critical and objective view from the study of the sixty buildings this design manual has been developed which provides a more synthetic approach to the principles which lie behind successful daylight design. These principles are illustrated with examples drawn from the case study buildings. The emphasis throughout has been on practical methods to improve design, rather than techniques studied for any intrinsic interest.

Part 1 provides a descriptive overview placing daylighting design on a time scale and against the background of climate and building use and cultural values. Part 2 follows a logical structure moving from the geographical location, the site and form of the building, through room design to the detailed design of the windows and including advanced daylighting elements. Part 3 covers design.

The book provides the necessary tools to assist the designer to provide well daylit interiors, and shows that good daylight design is not a restriction on architectural expression but, on the contrary, acts as an inspiration and foundation for good architecture.
